It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Bob Conge was an assistant professor at RIT' s College of Art from 1964-68. He graduated from RIT in 1962 and received his MFA from Syracuse University two years later. In 1964, he was awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany grant for painting and was appointed the director of the J. Thomas Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
